We have got itchy fingers this autumn and we are ready to get the winter off to a good start. We are in New Zealand and plum trees do not produce fruit until after the summer and we were quite chuffed to see a few small plums in the shop the other week. We have got quite a few plum trees in the garden but these plums are from a smaller tree that grows in the garden.

A good number of the Kiwi plum trees do not produce fruit until November. Kiwis fruit is harvested in New Zealand from December to March every year. You will see some kiwi fruits throughout the year in shops, supermarkets and also farm markets. The kiwi plum trees are not ready to pick for fruit until late in the autumn, so they do not produce fruit until the winter.

Plums need temperatures of at least 10-20C for them to start ripening. In the wild Kiwi plum trees like to grow in the high country, like the mountains, but in the cities we do not get the warmth and high temperatures that they need to grow properly.
