Calamondin: a beautiful indoor orange tree

The calamondin, or calamondino, is an indoor orange tree that adapts very well to the heated interior of our homes.

Plant, repot a calamondin

Calamondino in a pot:

It is recommended to plant the calamondin in a soil mixture possibly enriched with a fertilizer.

• The pot must be hole at the bottom to prevent the roots from stagnating in the water.

Ideally, place a layer of gravel, clay balls or pebbles at the bottom of the pot to make sure that the excess water drains well to the bottom.
Allow a layer of 3 to 4 cm.

Plan a repotting in a pot of slightly larger diameter every 2 to 3 years.

Calamondin outdoors:

It will only grow in the ground in areas with a Mediterranean or tropical climate.

In this case, mix your garden soil with planting potting soil and make sure your soil is well drained.

Otherwise, dig a slightly deeper hole and put a layer of pebbles, gravel, sand or clay balls at the bottom.

Caring for calamondin

For a citrus fruit, caring for calamondin is relatively easy.

Calamondin size:

No pruning is really necessary.

To rebalance the silhouette of the calamondin, prune lightly after repotting in the spring.

Repot the calamondin:

Repotting approximately every 2 years is recommended.

Do this preferably in late winter or in the spring after flowering and fruiting.

Otherwise, do it at the end of the summer.

The addition of a special citrus fertilizer considerably improves the quality of the fruits and the beauty of the foliage.

• Strengthen the resistance of your calamondin by adding fertilizer

Watering the calamondin

Indoors, water regularly, but not excessively as soon as the soil is dry.

• You may increase the doses in spring and in summer especially on a hot day.
• In winter, wait until the soil is dry for a few centimeters between 2 waterings.

To know about the calamondin

The calamondino is a small fruit shrub that gives edible fruits, but so sour that they are somewhat indigestible.
It is often chosen as houseplant.

If you can, it is good to take out your calamondin after any risk of frost, from spring until the end of summer.

Indoors, you will install it in a bright place, but avoiding the sun during the hottest hours.
Also avoid the direct proximity of a radiator.

Regular intake of citrus fertilizer will improve flowering and fruiting.
