Learn how to enhance urine, this yellow gold, on the scale of a family vegetable garden ... in addition to brown gold ( compost) and blue gold (water).
The idea of fertilizing your garden with the urine of family members is still a cultural taboo. However, it is organic waste that is easy to recycle, natural and easily exploitable, which represents an attractive alternative to synthetic fertilizers.
This is what the nurseryman and engineer Renaud de Looze demonstrates in his book "Urine, liquid gold in the garden" (new enriched edition, published by Terran), following 20 years of experimentation.
In the afterword, the head of experiments at the Terre Vivante center, Antoine Brosse-Platière, underlines:
“It is an abundant and free resource that is unfairly despised. However, it is beginning to give rise to scientific research in many countries, opening up promising perspectives. It is high time to rehabilitate the use of this liquid gold so precious in the garden ".
Urine, a cocktail of benefits
Fresh urine from a healthy person is sterile and therefore non-toxic. In general, it improves the structure of the soil and the health of plants.
It is made up of water and easily assimilated minerals by plants, such asnitrogen (6g / L) so beneficial for their growth, the potassium (2g / L) and the phosphorus (1g / L), equivalent to 100g of commercial organic fertilizer. It also contains magnesium, calcium, sulfur, sodium, chlorine, trace elements ... And in addition to being useful in the garden, its recycling allows to reduce the wastewater to be treated and to save money. commercial fertilizer.
Urine, instructions for use
Recycling urine is a practice within everyone's reach, at the level of a vegetable patch or a family garden. It suffices first to collect it separately from the faeces so as not to contaminate it with pathogenic bacteria, then to follow one of these two methods: "pour pure at once into the soil one to two weeks before planting the crops. ; or dilute 20 times in a watering can of water for a fractional application at the foot of soil crops, throughout the season, and in application every 15 days ".
The recommended doses are 1 to 3 liters of urine per square meter. "It is a suitable fertilizer for most plants. Proper dosing helps prevent excess nitrate and the risk of excessive salinity, advises the author. And to counter the appearance of odors, it must be poured into a ventilated and living soil: complementarity is therefore essential with a supply of compost or manure upstream, to be applied during the previous season ...
For 1L of urine, provide 1L (= 500 g) of compost to incorporate in the first 5 centimeters of the soil ”.
Even the potted plants can benefit from this liquid yellow gold: "Count 1 glass of 10 cl of urine in a 2 L (or 25 cl / 5 L) watering can, for one application every 2 to 3 weeks; 1 L of urine for a 20 L pot of potting soil is sufficient for 2 months fertilization. The ideal is to use this same mixture each time you repot ".
