In order to recreate this effect, first try to understand it. What can we really see? We are actually looking at a negative pattern of shapes surrounding the stones. Painting stones is easy but painting around them is not, so you need a workable duplicate pattern. In this case, the blobs of masking fluid become the shingle. Disperse them with an old toothbrush — your version of the tide. You can add perspective by spattering from the bottom up, meaning that the blobs get smaller as they near the horizon.

Multiple alternate layers of masking fluid and watercolour washes suggest the layers of stones. Each coat is darker, focused into small spaces around the stones. This method gives you texture, perspective, negative space and another element: chaos. Start by sketching out the composition on your page. Mask the edges of the boat, the name, details and beach timbers, all with a ruling pen. Mask out a few large stones with a colour shaper. You can refer to the image in step 11 for an idea of how these masked whites will look.

Spatter some shingle with a toothbrush and spray finer shingle by dragging your thumb across the bristles. Draw a few strands of fishing net with a dip pen. Wet everything except the boat, and brush Raw Sienna and Cadmium Red over the beach and sky, then Cyan over the sky in pale washes. Brush Cyan over the dark sides of the fi shing net heaps. When the washes are dry, spatter masking fluid with a toothbrush over the beach area. Always load the brush and apply from the bottom upwards — this creates the illusion of perspective through diminishing texture.

Each time you replenish the toothbrush, return to the bottom and work upwards again. Repeat the process until the beach is covered with hundreds of individual blobs of masking fluid. Note how I added masking tape to the masked inner edges of the boat to give a little more protection. Mask a few breakers in the sea. When the masking is dry, wet the sea area and apply Cyan wet into wet. Mask more dip pen lines on the nets. Apply a Cadmium Red and Raw Sienna mix to the beach.

Repeat the masking spatter process over the beach and this time apply a darker wash of Raw Sienna, Cadmium Red and Burnt Sienna. Add some darks of a mix of Burnt Sienna and Cobalt Blue to the foreground.

Cover the sea with a sheet of paper to protect the upper parts of the painting and apply another layer of spattered masking fluid across the beach. Each layer should be darker, whatever colours you choose. Let the masking fluid dry, then spatter more on, repeating the process two or three times — letting it dry prevents masking blobs coalescing together too much, though a few will anyway. The method never works perfectly but there is a happy medium and the end result is always good, so persevere.

This combination of paint and masking spatter creates the mass of shingle. Much of the foreground was covered in paint, whereas the distance was only spattered. When dry, remove the masking fluid. It should be thick enough to peel much of it off by hand. It can be very dirty with paint so be careful not to imprint this back onto the image as you rub it off. The dark paint should have found its way through the tiny gaps and spaces, making some accents, which would have been impossible to paint on directly.

This is a world of unfamiliar marks at a macro level. With the masking removed, dab a few masking fluid stones on the tops of the timbers and mix some greys with Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna and Cobalt Blue, ready to apply to them. Here I used the texture shapes as a guide and simply darkened the beach, leaving plenty of light stones. Some larger foreground stones were touched with two colours. I could never have done this without this important underlying spattered texture.

It comes out different every time, but it is amazing how much control you can have over spattering with a little practice. Now it is time to add in the boat by blocking in colour, starting with the wooden gunwales — the top edges of the side of the boat.

When they are dry, add in the plastic hull. Work it wet and add colour into the wet wash, reserving the white by keeping the paper dry. Apply a very pale mix of Burnt Sienna and New Gamboge to the gunwale near the reserved area. Add deeper colour further away, switching to Burnt Sienna only, then mixing into that a Cobalt Blue, ending with a darker mix of Burnt Sienna and French Ultramarine.

To finish up, wet the boat hull, reserving a patch of dry paper for the glint of light hitting it. Apply a pale mix of New Gamboge and Cadmium Red, leaving the dry area white. Add a deeper Quinacridone Red further away, using Cobalt Blue to grey it down on the right.

Brush Cadmium Red and Quinacridone Red below the glint when it dries, adding Cobalt Blue to the mix for the planking lines. Build up the planks with greys, letting each dry before moving on to the darker colours. Add darks and detail when dry and fill in the beach timbers.
